When asked what my favorite place in Ladakh was, Pangong Lake would have to be a no brainer. It's crystal clear water and breath taking surroundings make it one of the most visited tourist spots in Ladakh! The lake itself is 134 kilometers long and extends from India to China though 60% of the lake belongs to China.
During the winter, despite it being brakish water (slightly salty), the lake freezes completely. When this happens, people from all over the world come to Ladakh for the sole purpose of the Chandar Trek which is where people basically trek the frozen lake.
To get to the lake you would have to travel through Chang La pass which is claimed to be the second highest motorable pass in the world situated at a height of 17,590 ft. In order to reach this lake you would also have to go on the rockiest car ride of your life and having a weak stomach would not be an option but the view does make it about a million times better! In my opinion, It's one of the most scenic places on the planet (not that I've seen very much of the planet, but still). The water had every shade of blue known to mankind.
We stayed at the campsite by the lake in tents and I can honestly say that I have never felt colder in my life (after wearing a layer of thermals, an extra layer of clothes, plus a jacket)
